FAQs

Q. Why should I consider Millwood School for my child?
A.

Our philosophy at Millwood is that each child is unique, and no two children learn in exactly the same way or on the same day. The mission of Millwood School is dedicated to the growth of each student in a supportive environment that challenges the intellect, develops the body, and fosters moral values. Millwood can offer your child the chance to grow and develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, morally, and socially, in a nurturing but challenging environment, with no ceilings on achievement in any field.

Q. Is Millwood a good choice for Middle School for my child?
A. Yes! Sixth grade is a natural entry point, and new students are welcome. There are always a significant group of children joining the school in 6th grade, so you and your child would soon be part of the Millwood community. Parents choose Millwood Middle School for the small classes, personal attention, foreign language, art and music, technology, and access to sport teams. Even more important is the moral and academic guidance that they receive in these very important years. They are encouraged to work hard, respect others, achieve their best, and discover their strengths. And they enjoy doing this with others who are striving for the same goals.

Q. Millwood is an independent school. What does this mean?
A.

Our school is independently incorporated. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and the School Head. We are not affiliated with any church or denomination. Like other independent schools, Millwood’s distinct mission and excellent educational environment are funded through tuition payments, charitable contributions and endowment revenue. Millwood receives no financial support from any branch of government; the Board of Trustees meets regularly and ensures the financial health of the school.

Millwood School meets the highest accreditation standards and is an *accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS).  *Upper School accreditation pending.

Q. Do you have a Viewbook, Scheduled Tours or Open Houses?
A.
Yes, we have a Viewbook; please email or phone the school to request your copy.

We like to say that every day is an open house day at Millwood! We schedule tours for parents during normal school hours, when you can visit classrooms, observe instruction, view class work, and meet faculty and students. Contact Whitney Watson to arrange a visit.

If your child is already attending school (K-11th grade), they may come for a Millwood Morning visit. This is optional, but provides prospective students and parents a chance to experience Millwood prior to the formal application process.

We also have open houses in the fall and early winter. Please refer to the Open House information for the upcoming dates.

Please contact the school office to register your interest in attending an open house.

Q. Who are the Millwood families?
A.

Millwood families reflect remarkable ethnic, cultural, and geographic diversity. They are committed to providing a fine education for their children. Parents come seeking small classes and find an environment in which their children thrive. New families are welcomed into the Millwood family and are invited to get involved in a variety of school activities.

Q. What do you look for when admitting students to Millwood School?
A.

Our admission process considers students who have the potential to perform competently in an academically challenging environment. We are experienced in assessing a student's potential as well as their current abilities, and our testing process is encouraging and supportive. Students have the opportunity to excel beyond grade level in most areas. Students interested in the fine arts, technology, athletics, and community service find significant opportunities in these areas.

Q. How many openings will there be for Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Middle School, and Upper School and how many applications do you get?
A.

Spaces are limited. Please apply early to avoid disappointment.

Q. When should I apply for a place for my child?
A.

We recommend you start the admissions process in the fall prior to your child's start date. We have a rolling admissions process, so the earlier you apply, the more likely you are to be assured a place. Some grades fill early in the spring prior to the September start date. Should there be an opening in a particular grade, a mid-year enrollment is possible.

Q. Do you accept transfer students?
A.
Students are welcomed for entry into all grades JK through upper school, provided space is available. New students are warmly and swiftly integrated into the small and supportive classes. The 6th and 9th Grades offer a particularly natural point of entry into the  School. Students moving into the area mid-year are welcomed, provided space is available in the relevant grade.

Q. I am moving to Richmond from outside the area, or from abroad. Why should I consider Millwood for my child?
A.

Millwood knows how stressful it can be to move, especially with school age children. Finding the right school is essential, and if the children are happy and settle well, it makes all the difference to the whole family. Millwood has experience in welcoming students and their families from all around the world. No matter what school system your child has been in, the small and supportive classes provide the perfect transition, and your child can continue to learn at the level they are accustomed to.

Q. What is the cost of tuition at Millwood?
A.

The current tuition is listed on the Affording Millwood page of this website.

Tuition for the following academic year is set by the Millwood School Board of Trustees early in the calendar year

Q. Are there other fees besides tuition?
A.
There is an application and testing fee for grades K-upper school, and a registration fee for JK applicants.
The Enrollment Fee applies when a new family enrolls in a grade other than JK. This is a one time fee per family, which covers all children in the family.

Books, journals, and supplies are all included in the tuition for JK through 8th Grade.  Upper School students are required to purchase text books and supplies. Sport Team fees are included in tuition for all.
Additional fees include field trips, uniforms, Extended Day (optional), fun lunch (optional), milk (optional) and tuition refund insurance (optional).

Extended Day care is available for students in grades K-8 in both the mornings and afternoons, on days the school is in session.

For the latest fees, please check the Affording Millwood page of this website.

Q. Is Tuition Aid available at Millwood?
A.

Tuition aid is available and based on need. Tuition aid decisions are made after a student has been accepted and a tuition aid application has been submitted. Click here to go directly to the online application.

Q. How do students travel to Millwood each day?
A.

Parents either drive their children or carpool with other families. We provide a neighborhood list to families to enable parents and students to locate each other. Students come from all over the Midlothian, Chesterfield County and Richmond areas. We even have students from Henrico and Goochland.

Q. What should I do if I have more questions?
A. We encourage you to contact us, and come and visit.
