Millwood started as a dream of the founding and current head, Dr Louise Bagwell-Robinson. Recognizing the need for a public school alternative in the Midlothian area, she dreamed of a school with academic rigor coupled with high expectations for character development, all within an environment that was small, personal and nurturing. Others joined her, trustees, faculty, and parents, and together they turned this dream into an inspiring reality.

The first 20 students were enrolled in 1989, starting in trailers in Brandermill's Sunday Park before moving to an office building in 1992. Despite the modest facilities, parents could see that Millwood School offered a superior educational experience for their child. The school went from strength to strength, and as classes overflowed into an adjacent shopping center, the current campus was built.

In 1998, the school moved to its current site, a wooded, 79-acre campus in the neighborhood of Woodlake in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The campus includes a main academic building, multi-purpose building, gymnasium, sports field, outdoor track, and playgrounds. Millwood School now enjoys excellent facilities, fine professional teachers and staff, an outstanding curriculum, and a wonderful student.

Millwood School continues to evolve and grow. The plans for our new building and athletic fields, are very exciting. Work is already under way, as fundraising continues. The new facility will provide a wonderful learning environment for our Upper  and Middle School students, while also freeing up space for our Lower School to use. Further phases of our master plan include an Upper School Complex.
