Millwood School’s Spanish Students On The Go
12/11/2009
The students sat in on a Level II Spanish class and had the opportunity to interact in Spanish with the professor and the UVA students. Students took part in the class activities and even took pop quizzes. After class, they visited UVA’s foreign language lab and visited two exhibits at the Small Collection Gallery on the UVA campus: “The Architecture of the University of Virginia after Jefferson” and “The Declaration of Independence.”
Middle School Spanish students had the opportunity to attend the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet in Richmond. They saw a three part show which highlighted Spanish culture: A potpourri of colorful Zarzuelas, a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung operatic scenes. The second part showcased the tradition of La Tuna, a group of troubadours who traveled around Spain playing mandolins, tambourines and accordions during the 13th century when the first universities were being established. Part three was comprised of Tablao Flamenco, a mix of bolerias, solea, jaleo, sevillanas and rumba.
These students are not only learning to speak the language, but enjoying learning about the Spanish culture.
