Leadership

Millwood School sets high standards for character and behavior. Teachers make a continuous effort to help students use their talents and abilities in a constructive manner, to meet personal challenges and limitations, to appreciate differences in others, and to set and achieve personal goals with self-determination and persistence. In essence, Millwood encourages students to become productive and fulfilled individuals who are aware of their own self-worth and willing to give time and effort to others.

Millwood School is committed to fostering moral values. Each week our VIP program highlights a new Very Important Principle which is discussed by the whole school and incorporated into classroom lessons.

In practical terms, leadership is fostered in many ways. There is a Student Council in Middle School, and the students elect class representatives and officers. Students in all grade levels are involved in a variety of community service projects. Students can join the Millwood Youth Leaders club, which provides opportunities to learn about, and apply, leadership skills. Older students have several opportunities each year to present their projects to younger students.

“Millwood fosters a learning environment while establishing a high degree of accountability to self, teachers, parents and the community. We are so impressed by how the Big 10 and VIP’s are integrated into the curriculum and woven into the fabric of each child’s character.” – M. W., parent.

“We were very impressed with the way Millwood approaches character development in the students through a holistic process that is modeled by faculty, staff and administration. You truly develop the intellect, the body, and the moral character of the students as they journey through their formative years in a safe and loving environment. The overall calmness of the students, and the noticeable level of respect you have for each other, were also remarkable.” – D. C., VAIS Visitor

The Big Ten Code of Conduct

At Millwood School, the responsibility for good conduct rests on the student. Students follow a code of conduct called The Millwood Big Ten. Each student signs this pledge annually.

As a Millwood Student I will be a positive role model by:

  1. Striving for excellence in scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship.
  2. Taking pride in my personal appearance and following the dress code.
  3. Striving for acceptable, healthful, and positive behaviors.
  4. Listening while others speak.
  5. Taking pride in Millwood School.
  6. Sharing.
  7. Doing my best to bring honor to Millwood School.
  8. Always showing respect for people and property.
  9. Being responsible.
  10. Using good manners, being kind and courteous and considerate of others.
At Millwood, no one has the right to keep a teacher from teaching or a student from learning. Anyone who chooses to do so loses the privilege of being in class.
