Art Project Transforms Student Lounge

Millwood School’s upper school students gathered with families, teachers,  and friends on the evening of December 7th to celebrate the unveiling of an art project entitled, “The Mural, Eleven Personalities.”  The mural, which depicted, symbolic images of the upper school students against realistic looking brick walls, entirely changed the feeling of the upper school lounge.
 
The students described the work they had done and the imagery they had chosen to represent their lives.  This project had evolved as a result of the study of local and international muralists with their art teacher, Mr. Chris Palmer.

C. Camp wins Rotary Award Scholarship

The Brandermill Rotary Club has awarded Cody Camp a scholarship to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy.  Cody is the president of the Interact Club and a junior at Millwood School.  Interact is the high school/middle school division of Rotary International.  Mr. Don Vaught, the president of the Brandermill Rotary Club, made the award on Thursday, November 10 at its regular meeting at the Brandermill Country Club.  Cody will be joining other high school juniors and seniors from Virginia in February 2012 for the Youth Leadership Academy.

Dr. Lam Nguyen, a resident of Brandermill, has been recently appointed to the position of college counselor at Millwood School.  She will be launching the school’s 4-year program.

Millwood School Hosts Nationally-Recognized Performance Poet

On September 26, 2011, Millwood School will host nationally-recognized performance poet, Daniel Jose Custodio, at their middle and upper school assembly.  Daniel is an award-winning slam poet, author, and teacher and is one of the most recognizable names on the spoken word scene. Daniel’s works share his experiences as a first-generation-Latino, battling socio-economic oppression, all the way up to his present-day victories as an accomplished artist who, among many successes, was the first in his family to graduate from college and graduate school.
